높은 호환성도 한 회사 제품을 소비하는 이유다. 프로그램을 개발하는 대학생 김민규(24) 씨도 맥북부터 아이패드까지 애플에서 출시한 전자기기를 사 모은 ‘애플 마니아’다. 전자기기를 구매하는 데만 자비로 430만 원을 썼다. 휴학하고 인턴 활동을 하는 동안 차곡차곡 모은 돈이다. 김씨는 “호환성이 좋은 애플 제품이 개발에 유리하다”며 “편의를 목적으로 장비를 샀다”고 설명했다.중고노트북매입오동재(23) 씨는 전자기기를 구매하는 것 자체가 취미 생활이 됐다. 오디오 기기와 휴대폰에 관심이 많은 오씨는 잦은 중고 거래에 기기별 시세까지 꿰고 있다.
아픔이 있는 여성에게 접근해 돈을 빌리는 '지질남' 사연이 공개됐다.
팬데믹은 대학생들의 공부 방식뿐 아니라 라이프스타일도 크게 바꿔놨다. 사회적 거리두기로 집 밖에서 여가를 보내기 어려워진 학생들은 온라인 취미생활을 찾았다. OTT(Over The Top) 서비스 콘텐츠를 정주행하거나 유튜브를 시청하며 여가시간을 보내는 경우가 대다수였다.
사전 구매도 최신 제품을 비교적 저렴하게 사는 방법이다. 2021년에 전역한 황준혁(22) 씨는 군 월급 2개월분으로 140만 원 상당 최신 스마트폰을 사전 예약으로 구매했다. 출고가보다 30만 원 정도 싼 금액에 살 수 있는 데다 요금제 약정도 필요 없고, 제품을 제작한 회사에서 출시한 신형 무선 이어폰까지 증정품으로 받았다.
그러면서 “그 XX 조심하라”며 “사람 힘들 때 접근해서 돈 빌리고 나면 헤어지자는 놈이다”라고 충격적인 말을 했다.
이렇게 모은 돈의 행선지는 유명한 맛집도, 온라인 패션 쇼핑몰도, 비행기 표 예매 사이트도 아니었다. 류씨는 200만 원을 모두 최신형 노트북과 스마트폰을 구매하는 데 썼다.
‘빚투’(빚내서 투자)로 이미 대출 한도를 꽉 채워 카드사 현금서비스 등 2금융권 이용도 어려운 청년들이 전당포 문을 두드리고 있다. 급하게 돈이 필요하지만 융통할 데가 없다 보니 마지막 창구인 전당포에 물건을 맡기고 몇십만 원이라도 받아 가는 것이다. 평소 아꼈던 명품 가방과 시계, 노트북, 태블릿PC 등 돈이 될 만한 물품은 죄다 담보로 활용됐다.
“S급, A급, B급이 있다면, A급 이상을 사죠. 가격 방어가 잘 되는 제품을 사야 나중에 판매 가치가 안 떨어져요.”
“후회하죠. 더 빨리 살걸 하고요.”
신청자격은 동해시에 주소를 둔 시민의 자녀(친권자 또는 후견인이 동해시민인 자)로 춘천시 소재 2년제 이상 대학 입학생 또는 재학생 중 전염성 질환이 없는 자여야 한다.
또다른 고민녀는 SNS에서 선한 영향력을 가진 한 남자에게 반해 적극적으로 대시했고, 남자는 고민녀의 마음을 받아줬다. 하지만 남자친구는 전 여자친구의 연락을 끊어내지 못하는 사람이었다. 고민녀는 모진 말을 하지 못한다는 남자친구 대신 나서서 전 여자친구에게 경고해야 하는 어이없는 상황까지 맞닥뜨려야 했다.
“학생 입장에선 솔직히 큰맘 먹고 전자기기를 구매하게 되죠. 태블릿 PC 살 땐 앞뒤 안 재고 일단 사고 봤는데, 꽤 부담됐어요. 노트북은 자비로 살 엄두가 안 나네요.”
그럼에도 일부 학생들은 전자기기 구매 과정에서 경제적 부담에 직면한다. 윤영률(25) 씨는 비대면 수업으로 인해 학교에 갈 일이 없어진 후 강의자료 인쇄가 어려워지자 태블릿 PC를 구매하기로 마음먹었다. 결국 자비로 100만 원 상당 태플릿 PC를 샀는데 구매 후 경제적 부담을 느꼈다.
최씨는 모아둔 돈에 월 과외비 48만 원을 보태 생활비를 충당하고 있다. 모아둔 돈 잔고가 이젠 바닥 수준이다. 그렇다고 소비를 후회하지는 않는다.
루이셤 허브에서는 도움을 얻기 위해 가난을 증명할 필요가 없다. 물건 개수에도 제한을 두지 않았다. ‘필요한 만큼만 가져가세요’ ‘폭력은 용납되지 않습니다’라고 쓰인 큼지막한 안내 문구가 전부였다. 기부받은 베개와 이불을 정리하는 저스티나 씨(48)의 손과 발이 바빴다. “등록된 사람들은 정부에서 지원을 받지만, 등록되지 않은 사람은 여기서 도움을 얻는다. 루이셤 허브가 우리의 정부 같다.” 그는 나이지리아 출신 난민 신청자다. 처음 이곳에 생필품을 구하러 왔다가 자원봉사를 시작했다. 노트북매입학교 대신 아이들에게 노트북을 나눠주고, 구청 대신 위기 가정에 약과 음식을 배달했다. “여기가 아니었으면 지난 2년 동안 버티지 못했을 것이다.” 저스티나의 이야기이기도 했고, 지역사회의 이야기이기도 했다.
이민환 인하대 글로벌금융학과 교수는 “휴대전화 소액 대출 또는 전당포에 물건을 맡기고 대출을 받았다면 이미 은행이나 저축은행 같은 제도권 금융을 이용하기 어려운 처지가 대부분”이라면서 “금리가 오르면서 빚 갚기가 점점 어려워지는 악순환의 늪에서 빠져나오기가 쉽지 않을 것 같다”고 말했다.
전문가들은 코로나19 이후 공중보건에 재정을 투자하고 건강 불평등을 개선해야 한다고 정부에 요구했다. 영국 정부가 대량 해고를 막기 위해 ‘고용유지 계획’ 등을 도입했으나, 그것만으로는 벌어진 격차를 복구하기 어렵다고 봤다. 고용주가 노동자를 해고하지 않으면 노동자 월급의 80%까지 부담하는 정책이다.
건강 불평등 분야 석학인 마이클 마멋 유니버시티칼리지런던(UCL) 역학·공중보건학 교수도 이 문제에 골몰했다. 마멋 교수가 보기에 영국과 미국 같은 ‘고소득 국가’에서 유독 높은 코로나19 사망률을 보였다는 사실이 의미심장했다. “건강을 우선시하지 않는 정치 문화, 심화된 사회경제적 불평등, 공공의료 서비스에 대한 예산 감축이 코로나19의 높은 초과 사망률로 이어지게 했다. 우리는 이 공중보건 위기에 대응할 준비가 돼 있지 않았다.” 마멋 연구팀은 교육 공백, 실업, 정신 건강, 아동학대 등 다양한 분야에 걸쳐 코로나19가 끼친 영향을 조사했다. 2020년 12월 발표된 ‘더 공정하게 재건하기(Build Back Fairer)’ 보고서에 따르면, 가난할수록 팬데믹의 상흔도 더 컸다.
대학생들이 이렇게 과감하게 돈을 쓸 수 있는 건 한번 사두면 최소 2~3년은 쓸 수 있는 전자기기의 특성 때문이다. 고장이 나더라도 A/S를 받으면 더 오래 쓸 수 있다. 이에 일부 학생들은 성능과 디자인이 더 뛰어난 브랜드의 고가 제품을 구매하려 한다.
“싸게 많은 제품을 사기보다는 비싼 값에 사더라도 질 좋은 제품을 사겠다는 생각으로 구매를 결정했어요.”
억울하다면 적극적으로 자료를 내놓고 해명할 일이다. 그런데 불성실하기 짝이 없다. ‘엄마 찬스’ 의혹을 받는 복지관 노트북 기부 건을 보자. 한 후보자 자녀는 미국 매체에 말하길, 여러 기업 사회공헌 부서에 메일을 보냈고 “마침내 한 기업에서 연락이 와” 중고 노트북 후원을 연결할 수 있었다고 했다. 거짓이 아니라면 한 후보자가 당시 주고받은 메일을 공개하면 된다. 처음부터 엄마 지인의 도움을 받고는 뻥친 것이라면 깨끗하게 인정하면 될 일이다. 아이가 나름의 꿈이 있어 미국 대학 진학을 꾀하느라 무리했다고 밝히기만 했어도 좋았겠다. 그런데 기를 쓰고 ‘스펙 관리’ 해주고는 기를 쓰고 아니라고 한다. 해명은커녕 “지방에 좌천돼 있을 때라(나는 잘 모른다)”는 소리만 반복했다. (틈만 나면 좌천 타령인데 말 나온 김에 짚자. 대체 전국적인 공조직에서 2년여 지방 근무가 그리 못할 일인가. 월급이 끊겼나, 밥줄이 날아갔나.)
“먹고 입는 데 돈 쓰는 것보다, 배는 대충 채우고 아낀 돈으로 갖고 싶은 걸 살 때 큰 행복감을 느껴요. 만약 애플이 다른 제품을 만든다면 돈을 모아서 언젠가는 살 것 같아요.”
지금 영국에 산다면 난방과 음식 둘 중 하나를 선택해야 할지도 모른다. 코로나19 팬데믹 이후의 물가 폭등 때문이다. 지난 7월 영국 통계청(ONS)은 영국의 소비자물가지수가 전년 대비 10.1% 올랐다고 보고했다. 40년 만의 최고 기록이다. 우유, 밀가루, 버터 같은 주요 식자재는 물론이고 러시아·우크라이나 전쟁의 여파로 가스와 전기 요금이 눈에 띄게 치솟았다. 10월 기준 가구당 에너지 연간 최대 부담액이 3549파운드(약 563만원)에 이른다. 〈더타임스〉 8월16일 보도에 따르면, 영국 성인 16%가 돈을 아끼려고 정기적으로 끼니를 건너뛰었다.
적은 소득으로 생활하는 대학생들에게 전자기기 가격은 부담스럽다. 조금이라도 더 싸게 사려고 발품을 판다. 가장 쉽게 발품을 파는 방법은 중고거래 플랫폼을 이용하는 것이다. 검색창에 ‘노트북’ ‘아이패드’만 검색해도 거주지 근처에서 올라온 중고 거래 물품을 금방 확인할 수 있다.
수업 시작 전, 김씨는 일단 책상 오른편에 노트북을 펴두고 왼편에는 태블릿 PC를 세워놓는다. 노트북에는 수업 화면만 크게 띄워두고, 태블릿 PC로는 수업 자료를 내려받아 띄워둔다. 발표할 때 소리가 울리지 않도록 블루투스 이어폰 연결은 필수다. 수업이 시작되면 터치 펜슬을 잡고 태블릿 PC에 수업 내용을 필기하기 시작한다. 컴퓨터매입중간중간 수업에 필요하거나 궁금한 정보는 바로 화면을 전환해 웹서핑을 통해 찾아본다. 수시로 전환되는 화면은 마치 공상과학 영화의 한 장면을 연상케 한다.
이에 전자기기 시장은 팬데믹(감염병의 세계적 대유행) 기간에 호황을 맞았다. 시장조사업체 IDC에 따르면 2019년 국내 노트북 출하량은 234만 대였으나, 2020년 293만 대, 2021년 367만 대로 고공 행진했다. 태블릿 PC 출하량도 2021년 470만 대로 전년 대비 22.3% 급증했다.
황준혁(22) 씨는 최신형 노트북, 스마트폰을 구매하는 데 300만 원을 썼다. 적지 않은 돈임에도 아깝다고 생각하지 않았다.
자정까지 하루 8시간 일해 6개월을 아껴 모은 돈이지만 류씨에게 망설임은 없었다. 이렇게 의식주에 투자하는 돈을 아껴서라도 전자기기에 투자하려는 20대 대학생이 많다. 예전엔 노트북과 휴대폰 정도가 소비 생활의 전부였다면, 이젠 태블릿 PC, 블루투스 이어폰에 스마트워치까지 구매한다. 대학생들이 얇은 지갑을 열어 전자제품에 거액을 쏟는 이유는 무엇일까.대학생 김태희(21) 씨의 삶으로 들어가 봤다. 김씨는 2020년 입학한 ‘코로나 학번’이다. 김씨에게는 대학 진학 전에도 노트북과 태블릿 PC가 있었지만 입학과 함께 모두 새로 구매했다. 대학 수업이 비대면으로 전환한다는 소식에 내린 결정이다. 구매한 노트북과 태블릿 PC의 진가는 온라인 수업을 들을 때 발휘된다. 김씨에게 노트북은 칠판이고, 태블릿 PC는 필기 노트이자 수업 자료집이다.
2021년 10월12일 영국 하원 보건사회복지위원회와 과학기술위원회는 ‘코로나바이러스:지금까지 배운 교훈’이라는 147쪽짜리 보고서를 내놓는다. 역학자부터 NHS 의료진, 간병인 단체, 장애 아동을 돌보는 가족 등의 의견을 모아 영국 정부가 코로나19 대응에서 무엇을 놓쳤는지 6개 주제로 평가했다. 그중 재난 불평등을 조명한 점이 눈에 띈다. 보고서에 따르면, 아프리카계·아시아계 및 그 외 소수인종 출신(BAME:Black, Asian and Minority Ethnic)의 코로나19 사망률이 백인보다 현저히 높았다. 또 빈곤한 지역일수록 코로나19 사망률도 올라갔다. 같은 기간 학습장애·자폐증을 가진 이들의 사망률도 비교적 높게 나타났다. 의료 접근성이 크게 제한된 것이 이유였다.
그러나 2022년 가을, 런던에서 감염병이란 단어를 떠올리기는 쉽지 않았다. 버킹엄 궁전에서 열리는 근위병 교대식을 보기 위해 수천 명이 거리낌 없이 모이는가 하면 비좁은 지하철 안에서 아무도 마스크를 쓰지 않았다. 지도에 표시된 코로나19 검사소를 찾아가봤지만 닫혀 있었다.
떳떳하다면 왜 매체든 학술지든 행사의 사이트든 의혹이 제기될 때마다 관련 자료가 삭제되고 있을까. 특권층의 교육열로 치부할 일이 아니다. 글로벌 시대라고 눈감을 일도 아니다. 적어도 그런 이가 국록은 먹지 말아야 한다. 국민을 들먹이지는 말아야 한다. 그냥 돈 쓰고 유세 떨며 내 자식 ‘검은 머리 외국인’으로 키우면 된다.
“음악 듣는 귀가 예민한데 제대로 된 음색을 즐기고 싶어 이어폰과 헤드셋에 아끼지 않고 투자하는 편이에요. 휴대폰도 일부러 중고로 사고팔며 다양한 제품을 사용해 봤어요. 다 같아 보여도 조금씩 특징이 있는 게 재밌더라고요.”
마지막으로 곽정은은 "사연이 안타깝지만 왜 이 사람과 만나게 됐나 생각해 봐라. 이 사람 옆에 있으면 근사한 사람이 될 것 같았던 거 아니냐. 좋은 사람으로 보이고 싶었던 욕망을 가진 남자와 여자가 만나서 사고가 난 것뿐이다. 본인이 좋은 사람이 되어라. 그러면 이런 사람을 걸러낼 수 있다"라고 충고했다.
남자친구는 미안하다며 중고로 다시 사주겠다고 했다. 그가 사다 준 노트북은 키보드까지 하나 빠진 고물. 하지만 고민녀가 빌려준 노트북은 가격대가 천차만별인 고급 노트북이었다고.
일부 학생은 주위 권유나 주변의 소비에 구입을 결정하기도 한다. 류인산(21) 씨는 유행의 영향으로 아이폰을 구매했다.
선발인원은 1차의 경우, 남학생 15명(신입생 7명·재학생 8명), 여학생 12명(신입생 6명·재학생 6명), 2차는 남학생 2명(정시모집 신입생), 여학생 1명(정시모집 신입생)으로, 성적 50%, 가정환경 40%, 기타 10%의 배점 비율을 신입생과 재학생별로 점수를 환산 후 선발하게 된다.아이패드매입브랜드 충성도가 높아 특정 회사 제품을 사 모으는 학생들도 있다. 성능만큼이나 제품 디자인이 주는 감성에 만족감을 느낀다는 게 구매자의 설명이다. 김주영(24) 씨는 아이폰, 애플워치, 아이패드, 맥북, 에어팟까지 자비로 구매한 애플 충성고객이다. 가격이 부담되긴 하지만 애플 시리즈를 소장하는 것만으로도 심리적 만족감을 느낀다.
팬데믹의 영향은 지역사회 깊숙한 곳에 조용히 새겨져 있었다. 루이셤 허브가 그런 곳이었다. 이곳 대표인 스미스 씨는 원래 패스트푸드를 배달하는 자전거 배달 기사였다. 코로나19 확산 초기, 학교와 요양원에 스무디를 나눠주는 자선사업에 동참했는데 예상 외로 규모가 커졌다. 봉쇄 조치로 일자리를 잃거나, 생활고에 시달리는 저소득 계층이 급증했기 때문이다. “우리는 매일 음식을 데울 수도, 심지어 불을 켤 수도 없는 사람들을 수없이 마주한다. 팬데믹 이후 영국의 복지 시스템은 근본적으로 망가졌다.” 지난 2년간 스미스 씨는 감염병이 취약계층의 삶을 어떻게 위기로 내몰았는지 목격했다.

“음료수 사 먹는 것도 아끼고 술자리도 많이 안 나갔어요. 부모님께 용돈 받을 일이 있으면 쓰기보다는 항상 조금씩이라도 더 저축했습니다.”
김숙은 "'나를 필요로 하는 사람에게 가겠다'는 말은 누구에게나 갈 수 있다는 뜻이다. 이런 사람은 나의 연인이 될 수 없다. 처음에 너무 착한 것만 보고 그 남자를 선택한 건 아닌지 고민해봐라"라고 덧붙였다.
원 동해시는 지역 출신 우수 대학생들의 기숙사를 지원하기 위해 2023학년도 강원대학교 향토학사 입사생을 모집한다고 27일 밝혔다.
4일 서울의 한 전당포를 찾아 직원에게 휴대전화 담보대출이 가능한지를 묻자 곧바로 기종을 물었다. 해당 기종을 밝히자 직원은 “20만원에 이자는 따로 없는데 대신 수수료를 2만원 더 받는다”고 했다. 대출 기한은 3주. 그 이후에도 빌려 간 돈을 갚지 않으면 휴대전화는 전당포 소유가 된다고 했다.
정치권의 응답은 ‘부자감세’ 정책이었다. 9월23일 리즈 트러스 당시 영국 총리는 경제성장을 이유로 소득 상위 1%에 대한 최고세율(45%) 인하안을 발표했다. 팬데믹 대응 현장에서 호소하던 요구와는 분명 배치되는 응답이었다. 트러스 총리의 감세 정책 발표 이후 영국 파운드화의 가치는 떨어지고 전 세계 금융시장은 혼돈에 빠졌다.
라파엘 씨는 아마 그 16%에 속할 것이다. 그를 만난 건 9월28일 런던 루이셤에 위치한 ‘루이셤 기부 허브(Lewisham Donation Hub·이하 루이셤 허브)’에서였다. 다양한 이민자들이 거주하는 루이셤 지역은 이방인들의 ‘피난처’로 불릴 만큼 자선단체와 푸드뱅크가 활발하게 활동하는 곳이다. 루이셤 허브도 그중 하나다. 코로나19 이후 식량난과 빈곤에 대응하기 위해 2020년 6월 지역 주민들이 자발적으로 시작한 프로젝트다. 생필품을 무료로 구할 수 있어 아프가니스탄과 우크라이나 난민들에겐 꽤 유명했다. 라파엘 씨 가족은 이곳에서 15인치 ‘델’ 노트북과 세 아이를 위한 운동화, 여벌옷을 구했다. 지난 2년간 하루 평균 100여 명이 굶주림을 해결하기 위해 이곳을 찾았다. 전기를 쓰지 못해 초를 가져가는 경우도 있었다. 취재진이 놀라자 루이셤 허브 대표인 로런스 스미스 씨(36)가 농담조로 말했다. “영국에 오신 걸 환영합니다!”
최인범(23) 씨도 그중 한 명이다. 좋아하는 유튜브 영상을 몰입감 있게 시청하고 싶어 고가의 장비를 사 모았다. 데스크톱 PC, 태블릿 PC에 품질 좋은 무선 마우스와 복고 감성으로 디자인된 키보드, 오디오인터페이스, 마이크, 헤드폰까지 구비했다. 모니터도 60만 원 상당 고가 제품으로 샀다. 맥북매입일부는 가족들의 도움으로 구매했지만, 최씨 본인도 100만 원 이상 투자했다.
서장훈은 "이렇게 끝내는 거냐"며 황당해했고, 곽정은은 "원한을 조금도 사지 않고 이별하는 새로운 방법인 것 같아 마음이 무겁다"며 안타까워했다. 한혜진은 "저 방식의 장점이 있다. 자신을 미워하는 사람이 제로가 된다. 헤어질 때도 이별의 원인 제공자는 상대방인 것"이라고 분석했다.
강원대학교 춘천캠퍼스 내 위치한 향토학사는 다산관(남학생 전용)과 예지원(여학생 전용)으로, 모집인원 총 30명을 2차로 나눠 진행된다.
조양희(23) 씨도 중고 거래 플랫폼으로 전자기기를 구매한다. 그 덕분에 데스크톱 PC, 노트북, 최신형 스마트폰, 블루투스 이어폰, 아이패드까지 사고도 200만 원밖에 쓰지 않았다. 자주 거래하다 보니 중고 거래 노하우도 생겼다. 부담스러운 비용을 아끼기 위해 사용한 뒤 되팔 수 있는 상태 좋은 제품을 골라 구매하는 전략이다.
지지율이 급락하자 트러스 총리는 10월3일 최고세율 인하안을 백지화했다. 그러나 복지지출 삭감안은 논쟁거리로 남았다. 스미스 씨는 루이셤의 현실을 봤다면 나올 수 없는 구상이라고 비판했다. “어떤 이유에선지 영국 정부는 부자를 더 부유하게 만들면 그것이 가난한 사람들에게 도움이 될 것이라는 결론에 도달했다. 많은 사람들이 극복하기 어려운 빈곤 상태에 들어서게 될 것이다.”
그 시기 가정폭력을 피해 아이를 데리고 집을 나온 한 여성이 루이셤 허브의 문을 두드렸다. 유아차를 구하기 위해서였다. 때로 런던에서 몇 시간이 걸리는 리버풀과 웨일스, 심지어 스코틀랜드에서도 생필품을 구하러 왔다. 그는 인터뷰 내내 ‘충격적(scandalous)’이라는 표현을 여러 번 썼다. “영국의 코로나19 규제는 생필품을 조달할 능력이 가장 적은 사람들을 부당하게 차별했다. 그들에게 보호 시스템은 작동하지 않았다.” 시민 4000여 명이 루이셤 허브의 폐쇄 결정에 항의하는 청원에 서명을 했고, 결국 시의회는 청원을 받아들였다.
